The project was developed during the workshop ‘The Activation of Intermediate Urban Space through Light Art and Design’, held by the artist Carlo Bernardini.
The proposal starts from the need to have an aggregation place, which is currently missing, for the inhabitants of Bovisa district in Milan.
The site of the intervention is the long time unused gasometer. residue of the old industrial activity. Even though it is abandoned it stands out in the skyline of this peripherical area, and has the potential to become a new center for the district.
Through the use of light art as a design tool we decided to awaken the soul of this structure through an interactive installation, which is made by large polyester fiber sheets fixed to the structure and illuminated at night with color changing LED spotlights.
Presence sensors activate a physical “network of relations” made of linear light tracks on the ground around the gasometer. The sensors also dim the light intensity of the spotlights, which gets stronger as the number of visitors rises.
